Windows Phone 8 Devices – List of Smartphones

Windows Phone is a comparatively new entry into the world of mobile operating systems and is gaining momentum with the new version, Windows Phone 8, set to launch this fall. Yes, we know Microsoft isn’t new to the mobile OS game, but we’re considering Windows Phone 7.5 as the start of this trend, Windows Mobile is pretty much a completely different platform that has been replaced. Devices with Windows Phone 7.5 hit stored in September 2011 to positive reviews. It’s hardly been a year and Windows Phone 8 is set to launch. Windows Phone 8 devices will come with more powerful hardware and has features Windows Phone 7.5 devices didn’t, like NFC, expandable memory, support for HD screen resolutions, multi-core processors and more. Best part is, it shares the kernel with Windows 8, so apps can be made for on platform and ported to another very easily. There’s also UI changes and more built in functions. The bad news is that none of the current Windows Phone 7.5 devices will get this update, no matter how new it is. Only new phones will ship with Windows Phone 8. However, older phones get an update called Windows Phone 7.8 that will include some new features including the UI customization. So if you’re interested in Windows Phone 8 devices and want to know which devices are coming out with Microsoft’s new mobile OS, read on!

Windows Phone 8 Devices

Note: This list will be updated as more devices are announced.

Nokia was the first manufacturer to introduce a Windows Phone 7.5 device, the Lumia 800. Even though this time it isn’t considered the “flagship” of Windows Phone 8, Nokia’s new handsets pack more than a punch and are really innovative. The first wave of Nokia Windows Phone 8 devices include the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820. The Lumia 920 is the higher end of the bunch, with a brilliant HD+ screen, PureView camera and classy unibody design. The Lumia 820 will fill in the mid range slot and replace the Lumia 800, it features expandable memory unlike its bigger brother though. Here’s the specs of these smartphones:

Update (5/12/12): Nokia Lumia 620 has been announced as the budget Windows Phone 8 device and will retail for 249$.

This time around, the Taiwanese manufacturer gets the right to make “signature” Windows Phone 8 devices. The devices themselves will feature the OS name in their nomenclature and sure look promising. Again, there are two models to choose from, the Windows Phone 8X and Windows Phone 8S. Amongst them, the 8X will be the higher end one. While the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 share CPU, GPU, RAM and such, the 8X and 8S feature different hardware. HTC has taken a cue from Nokia and made both phones in funky colors and of course, there’s Beats Audio included. Both these devices are touted to be less expensive than their Nokia counterparts. The 8X features pretty much the same SoC as the Lumia 920 and 820, it’s the 8S that’s a little different. Here’s the spec sheets:

Earlier, information had leaked about high end and mid range Samsung Windows Phone 8 devices, but as of now only the high end Samsung Ativ S has been announced. It takes most of its design cues from the Samsung Galaxy S3 and has basically the same internals as the US LTE version of the S3. It was the first Windows Phone 8 device announced, and is the only one as of now that comes in different storage variants. Featuring a brushed aluminium finish, the Ativ S is in stark contrast to the bright phones from both Nokia and HTC. It doesn’t have a killer feature as such, but the Ativ S will appeal to the business end of the market with its quiet elegance. Not to mention, there’s a huge battery to keep things going on for long. Spec sheets follow:

Windows Phone 8 Devices - Samsung Ativ S

SoC: Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 MSM8960CPU: 1.5 GHz Dual-core KraitGPU: Adreno 225RAM: 1 GB RAMStorage: 16 GB/32 GB, expandable upto 32 GB via MicroSD slotScreen: 4.8 inch Super AMOLED HD screen, 720 x 1280px (306ppi)Camera: 8MP rear facing camera (1080P video recording), 1.9MP front facing cameraConnectivity: Bluetooth v3.0, Wi-Fi, NFC, MicroUSB portBattery: 2300 mAh

Huawei is the last manufacturer that is releasing its smartphone in the first wave of Windows Phone 8 devices. Unlike others, there is only one phone announced, which will cater to the budget/mid range segment. The Huawei Ascend W1 is supposed to go for around 320$ unlocked, which quite honestly is a great price for what it’s offering. There’s not much information about the Ascend W1, but from what we know, it could be a good choice to enter the Windows Phone 8 ecosystem. For those people who think Windows Phone 8 still doesn’t justify high end phone price tags, this could be the phone for you!

This is by no means a comprehensive list, the specs, details and more will be updated as we know about more Windows Phone 8 devices, so keep an eye on this space! There’s still smartphones yet to come, the second wave will include more manufacturers like ZTE and the first wave manufacturers are also sure to unveil more offerings. 5 Best Smartphones under 15000 rupees for this Diwali

If there’s one thing that sells anytime of the year, it’s a mobile phone. However, during the festive season, you can really see mobiles fly off the shelves what with all the Diwali offers. There’s no better time for the budget buyer to grab a smartphone too, you can get yourself a pretty good smartphone without breaking the bank. The market is flooded with smartphones, so if you’re looking for the best smartphones under 15000 rupees, you’ve come to the right place! Manufacturers have finally understood that economical smartphones really move some units, so some of the biggest names in the game have launched smartphones for the budget buyer. Here’s our top picks for this season, arranged by lowest to highest price.

Best smartphones under 15000 rupees - Karbonn A21

First up is our very own desi Karbonn A21. Even though it’s the least expensive on our list of the best smartphones under 15000 rupees, it sure packs a punch. In fact, it has some of the best hardware this side of 15 grand. Packing in a Qualcomm Snapdragon S3 SoC, a 1.2 GHz dual core Scorpion processor and 512 MB of RAM, the Karbonn A21 is almost as powerful as the much more expensive HTC Desire X and actually uses the same SoC. It’s got a pretty good 4.5 inch screen, and a decent 5 MP rear facing camera along with a front facing 0.3 MP camera. There’s also expandable memory upto 32 GB and a fairly large 1800 mAh battery. In terms of value for money, the Karbonn A21 is an absolute steal.

Price: Rs. 10,790

Best smartphones under 15000 rupees - Micromax Canvas 2 A110

Our second Indian entry in the list is the Micromax Canvas 2 A110. This is probably the cheapest “phablet” you can get, it packs in a huge 5 inch LCD screen, a dual core 1 GHz processor, 512 MB RAM and expandable memory upto 32 GB (2 GB internal). Rounding it off is an 8 MP rear facing and 0.3 MP front facing camera. The 2000 mAh battery ensures that the Canvas 2 keeps going on and on. The slight downside is that even though the screen is large, the resolution is still WVGA, so the pixel density isn’t too much to write home about. Otherwise, what other “phablet” can you get for this price?

Price: Rs. 10,990

Best smartphones under 15000 rupees - Sony Xperia U

The Sony Xperia U is another addition to the already bafflingly huge Sony smartphone lineup. You are definitely going to get confused about the number of phones Sony has on offer. However, the Sony Xperia U stands out for being a solid, good looking device with great specs for the price. Inside you will find a STE-U8500 SoC with a 1 GHz dual core processor, 512 MB of RAM and Mali-400MP GPU. There’s a colored strip just below the screen that lights up according to your preference or the background, and will appeal to those with a funkier fashion sense. There’s a pretty good 5 MP rear facing camera and a 0.3 MP front facing camera for video calling. The only downside is that there’s only 8 GB of internal memory, which is non expandable. On the whole, a good buy if you’re not too concerned with cramming movies and music in your phone.

Price: Rs. 13,500

Best smartphones under 15000 rupees - HTC One V

Yes, we know the One V costs around Rs. 17,000 or so, but a lot of online retailers and specially eBay deals has it for under Rs. 15000. In terms of specs there’s not much to boast about here, there’s a 1 GHz single core processor, 512 MB of RAM and a 1500 mAh battery. But looking past that, the HTC One V has fantastic build quality, comes with HTC’s own UI called HTC Sense 4.0 and is the cheapest phone with the Beats Audio enhancement. It’s got a premium feel to it and in most situations you won’t really miss the lack of processing power. The 3.7 inch Super LCD2 screen is also great to look at, and you can even expand the memory upto 32 GB (4 GB internal).

Price: Rs. 14,990

Best smartphones under 15000 rupees - Nokia Lumia 710

If Android isn’t your thing, look no further than the Nokia Lumia 710. It runs Windows Phone 7.5, soon to be upgraded to Windows Phone 7.8 which will bring some new features of Windows Phone 8 to it. It has basically the same internals as the Nokia Lumia 800, and while on paper it doesn’t seem like much, the Lumia 710 does not slow down and zips through the Windows Phone 7.5 interface. There’s a 1.4 GHz Scorpion processor, 512 MB RAM and a great 3.7 inch LCD screen with Nokia’s ClearBlack technology. The downsides, other than the rather obvious one of not being able to upgrade to Windows Phone 8, are the non expandable 8 GB of storage and single 5 MP rear facing camera. But this Diwali, Nokia is offering a Nokia Stereo Bluetooth headset for free as well, so that’s a pretty good deal that makes it a worthy contender among the best smartphones under 15000 rupees.

Price: Rs. 14,999

All the Android phones above run on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and all of them are 3G capable. That about wraps up our feature on the 5 best smartphones under 15000 rupees for this Diwali! Do let us know if there’s something we missed or if there’s another phone you think that deserves to be on this list. Until next time!

Sony Xperia T, V and J Smartphones Unveiled

The 2012 edition of IFA at Berlin, Germany promises a lot of big announcements. It’s just begun and great new devices have already been unveiled! Sony has unveiled its new range of Xperia smartphones, the Sony Xperia T, Sony Xperia V and Sony Xperia J. Out of the three, the Sony Xperia T is the flagship model and promises to be a multimedia powerhouse. The specs seem fantastic and it looks like it will live up to the promise. Next up is the similarly powered Sony Xperia V which has a very special characteristic not found on on many smartphones. Last but not least is the affordable Sony Xperia J which will cater to the budget consumer. Check out more about the Sony Xperia T, V and J here.

Sony Xperia T, V and J - Xperia T

Here it is, the most powerful Sony Xperia smartphone yet. The Sony Xperia T will be Sony’s flagship model for now and it sure looks great. With NFC, a huge HD screen and a high powered camera, Sony is promising a complete media powerhouse. The good news is, unlike the previous flagship Sony Xperia S, the Xperia T will feature expandable memory, come bundled with Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich and Sony promises an Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update very soon! Here are the specs:

CPU/Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 MSM8960, 1.5 GHz Dual-core KraitGPU: Qualcomm Adreno 225RAM: 1 GBStorage: 16 GB internal + MicroSD expandable upto 32 GBDisplay: 4.6 inch TFT Capacitive HD LCD, 720 x 1280px (323 ppi)Camera: 13MP rear facing camera (1080P video recording), 1.3MP front facing camera (720P video recording)Connectivity: Bluetooth v3.1, NFC, MicroUSB slot, Wi-Fi hotspotOS: Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich

Sony Xperia T, V and J - Xperia V

The Sony Xperia V is also similarly powered to the Sony Xperia T save for a smaller screen and less powerful front facing camera. In other words, it’s like a rugged version of the Sony Xperia T. It still comes with the same resolution screen, so the pixel density is higher than that of the Sony Xperia T and in case you’re wondering, even the iPhone 4S. The coolest feature it has that hardly any high end Android smartphones have is that it’s waterproof. That’s right, this powerful device can survive upto 1m under water for 30 minutes, no problems at all. It meets the worldwide IP55 and IP57 protocols for durability and has a very strong shell. Similar to the Xperia T, expect a Jelly Bean update soon.

CPU/Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon S3 MSM8960, 1.5 GHz Dual-core KraitGPU: Qualcomm Adreno 225RAM: 1 GBStorage: 8 GB internal + MicroSD expandable upto 32 GBDisplay: 4.3 inch TFT Capacitive HD LCD, 720 x 1280px (346 ppi)Camera: 13MP rear facing camera (1080P video recording), 0.3MP front facing cameraConnectivity: Bluetooth v3.1, NFC, MicroUSB slot, Wi-Fi hotspotOS: Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich

Sony Xperia T, V and J - Xperia J

Finally, we have the Sony Xperia J, which will be Sony’s new budget offering. It’s got pretty cut down specs compared to the two above, but they’re still nothing to scoff at. It will come with Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich, but unlike the other 2 devices it might not get Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. However, it does come with a front facing camera and expandable memory. Connectivity options are also less compared to the Xperia T and Xperia V. Expect a better battery life though, here are the specs:

CPU/Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon S1 MSM7227A, 1 GHz Single Core ARM Cortex-A5GPU: Qualcomm Adreno 200 (Enhanced)RAM: 512 MbStorage: 4 GB internal + MicroSD expandable upto 32 GBDisplay: 4 inch TFT Capacitive LCD, 480 x 854px (245 ppi)Camera: 5MP rear facing camera, 0.3 MP front facing cameraConnectivity: Bluetooth v2.1, MicroUSB slot, Wi-Fi hotspotOS: Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich

So this was just the beginning, lots more announcements are on the way from IFA 2012, stay tuned! Do let us know what you think of the Sony Xperia T, V and J in the comments below.
