Aakash 2 specs – New low cost tablet launched at Rs 1,130

The much talked about Aakash tablet was released to less than stellar reviews and a staggering amount of complaints. Aakash tablet was considered a failure. It was written off as just another good idea gone to waste, but it’s back! Today we saw the successor to the Aakash tablet, the Aakash 2 launch. One of the main complaints with the low cost Aakash tablet was, other than the delivery problems of course, it’s sluggish performance. Granted it was a low cost tablet, but a 366 MHz processor and 256 MB RAM just couldn’t cut it. It didn’t help that the build quality wasn’t up to the mark and deliveries took months or in some cases, didn’t arrive at all. The solution was to bump up the Aakash 2 specs.

Aakash 2 specs

The HRD Ministry in association with Datawind has launched the Aakash 2 tablet which hopes to erase all the bad memories from the past launch and hopefully be what the original was supposed to be. According to the press release, the Aakash 2 will be sold to Indian students for just Rs. 1130 and Datawind is supplying it to the Indian Government for Rs. 2265. The commercial version of the same tablet is available on the Datawind website for Rs. 4499. So here are the Aakash 2 specs:

Processor: 1 GHz single core ARM Cortex A8RAM: 512 MB RAMScreen: 7 inch capacitive touchscreenStorage: 4 GB internal, expandable upto 32 GB via MicroSD cardConnectivity: WiFi, GPRS (optional) and Mini USB portCamera: VGA front facingOS: Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich

You can get your Aakash 2 tablet from your educational institution for the subsidized price, or you can visit the Datawind Official Website and buy the commercial version of  Aakash 2 which is more expensive, but also has the option of a SIM slot. So what do you think, with the Aakash 2 launched, is it going to make an impact? Will Datawind finally deliver on the lofty promises they made with the original Aakash tablet and can they deliver on time? Only time will tell. Meanwhile, let us know what you think of the Aakash 2 specs and drop us a comment!

Acer Iconia B1 budget tablet announced – Specs, pricing and more

For most manufacturers these days, budget tablets are where it’s at. Even Indian manufacturers have come out with so many budget tablets, it’s become hard to differentiate between them (we’re looking at you, Micromax). But then again, budget tablets are usually associated with slow processors, inadequate RAM and old OS versions. Other than the excellent Nexus 7 which really shouldn’t be considered a budget tablet, there isn’t a tablet that gives you a lot for a low price. That’s all set to change with the Acer Iconia B1 budget tablet, which will feature specs similar to a certain older 7 inch tablet which launched at 159$.

Acer Iconia B1 budget tablet 2

The Acer Iconia B1 budget tablet is the Taiwanese company’s attempt to make headway into the low budget game and with their reputation for combining good build quality and specs at a reasonable price, it could turn out to be a winner. Featuring specs similar to the Kindle Fire which retails for 159$, the Acer Iconia B1 budget tablet is rumored to cost just 99$! This puts it in direct contention with the rumored 99$ Nexus tablet from Asus which is supposed to make it’s debut in CES 2013. Made specifically for emerging markets, the Acer Iconia B1 budget tablet will release in South East Asia, South America, China and some parts of Europe as well in early 2013. If Acer manages to actually sell the tablet for this price, local players like Karbonn and Micromax might have a thing to worry about. Even after conversions and taxes if the Acer Iconia B1 budget tablet goes for under Rs. 7000 it will be a good deal. Here’s the specs:

SoC: MediaTek MT6577CPU: 1.2 GHz dual-coreGPU: PowerVR SGX 531RAM: 512 MB RAMStorage: 8 GB, expandable upto 32 GB via MicroSDScreen: 7 inches TFT LCD, 1024 x 600 px (169 ppi)Connectivity: Bluetooth v4.0, Wi-fi, GPS, MicroUSB 2.0 slotCamera: 1.3 MPOS: Android 4.1.2Battery: N/APrice: 99$

Although the battery capacity hasn’t been mentioned yet, the above specs aren’t particularly power hungry. Sure they’re not cutting edge, but they will do the job. It wasn’t too long ago that these were standard specs for new tablets, so for this price we can’t really complain. Drop us a line and let us know what you think about the new offering from Acer, yay or nay?

HCL ME V1 tablet with calling function launched

Just like Micromax and Swipe Telecom, HCL has too introduced a new 7 inch tablet with calling function. The HCL ME V1 tablet is the first tablet from the Indian manufacturer that can make its place among the tablets with calling function under Rs. 10000. While their previous offering, the HCL ME Tablet Y2 is capable of making calls, it also retails at a much higher price tag of Rs. 14999. Yes the HCL ME V1 tablet does compromise on some aspects, but it’s basically one of the cheapest tablets that is capable of making calls, and it’s not from an unknown manufacturer either.

HCL ME V1 tablet

It’s not going to win any awards for speed or innovation, but if all you need is a basic tablet that can make calls and won’t burn too big of a hole in your pocket, the HCL ME V1 tablet will do quite nicely. It’s got enough specs if you’re going to check mails, browse the internet or occasionally watch a movie, speaking of which, it supports full 1080P video playblack. One of the biggest compromises here is that although you can insert and use a 3G SIM for calls, you cannot browse the internet with 3G speeds. For faster speeds, you can connect through Wi-Fi or simply use a universal 3G dongle or a 3G dongle from any of the best network providers to browse at 3G speeds.

Processor: 1.0 GHz single core ARM Cortex-A8RAM: 1 GB RAMStorage: 4 GB inbuilt, expandable upto 32 GB via MicroSD cardScreen: 7 inch TFT LCD capacitive touchscreen, 800 x 480 pxCamera: 2 MP rear facing with flash and 0.3 MP front facingBattery: 3200 mAhConnectivity: Bluetooth 3.0, Wi-Fi, MicroUSB 2.0 SlotOS: Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream SandwichPrice: Rs. 7790

It comes with just Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box and there’s no mention of an Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update as of now, but with those specs we don’t think that’s going to be possible. The HCL ME V1 tablet will retail for Rs. 7790 and will go against the Micromax Funbook Talk. Do drop us a line with what you think about this launch!

Nokia Windows 8 RT Tablet Leaked – Microsoft Surface RT competitor

Nokia sure seems to be completely sold on the Windows platform, because the previous rumors about a Nokia Windows 8 RT tablet are apparently true! This will be the first Windows 8 RT tablet from the Finnish manufacturer, and it will go head to head with the Microsoft Surface RT. While not much is currently known about the tablet, it’s rumored to look like a larger version of the Nokia Lumia series of phones, which means bright colors and the signature Nokia build, which is fine by us since the Lumia series are great looking Windows Phone 8 devices.

Since Windows 8 RT is capable of running on ARM based processors and they’re basically less power hungry than desktop and laptop processors, we can expect good battery life. In fact, Nokia claims the device is capable of 10 hours of active use all by itself, which is exactly what the Microsoft Surface promised but unfortunately couldn’t deliver. The Nokia Windows 8 RT tablet is going to pack in a couple of extra features as well that’s going to give it the edge over the Microsoft Surface.

As of now, the Nokia Windows 8 RT Tablet is said to come with a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor, at least 2 GB of RAM but there’s no concrete information on storage and if it includes support for expandable storage either. The screen is said to be 10.1 inches, and similar to the Microsoft Surface RT. Interestingly, the Nokia Windows 8 RT tablet is set to come with cellular support in addition to Wi-Fi. Plus, the best part is an attachable keyboard cover a la the Microsoft Surface that will not only double up as a kickstand, but will include 2 USB ports for further expansion and an extra battery pack that will extend the battery life of the tablet will be launched as well!

Nokia Windows 8 RT Tablet

What remains to be seen if the Nokia Windows 8 RT tablet will be priced competitively, because most people seem to think that the Microsoft Surface RT is overpriced, even though it’s pretty much same as the iPad. Yes the app store is comparatively barren to those on rival operating systems, but if the device is great we can expect better adoption rates in the future. Nokia isn’t in the best shape right now so let’s hope that the Nokia Windows 8 RT tablet gets it back on track, your thoughts?

Google tips to Optimize a Website for Tablet and Smartphone users

Mobile devices such as Smartphones, and especially Tablets, are now fast becoming more and more popular, and although nowhere near replacing desktops, they do seem to be gaining up on browser statistics. Now, they have more than 10% of the share, with Tablets almost as much being used as smartphones. This makes optimizing websites for mobile devices all the more important. But tablet users now don't want you to return a mobile version of your website to them. They want the desktop experience. But although there are no official guidelines from Google on creating search engine and user friendly tablet-optimized site, there are a few tips you can apply to make your website work across multiple platforms.Smartphones often have small screens (despite high resolutions). So it is okay to return a mobile version of your site to them. But what about tablets? Tablets have much larger screens, and their hardware has gotten quite advanced, so as to be at par with a computer. So for them, rich-desktop versions of websites is just as easily manageable as on the desktops themselves. One good way to optimize your website for different devices is to use responsive web design. Since there are so many tablets out there, and so many screen sizes, you can't just target your website at just one screen size. This is where responsive web design helps. We have discussed about it in more detail in another post. Responsive designs re-adjust themselves according to the user's screen size. So they will look great across multiple platforms. Another suggestion is to create multiple versions of your website, and then detect the user's platform beforehand. You can then redirect him to the appropriate version of your website. Smartphone users go to the mobile version, whereas tablet users go to the desktop one.In order to detect whether a user has a tablet or a smartphone, you need to look at the user-agent string returned by browsers. Mobile users have the keyword "Mobile" in them. Tablets don't. Here's an example of a string returned by Chrome on a smartphone.
Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; Android 4.1.1; Galaxy Nexus Build/JRO03O) AppleWebKit/535.19 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/18.0.1025.166 Mobile Safari/535.19
Similarly, here's a string returned by Firefox on a smartphone.
Mozilla/5.0 (Android; Mobile; rv:16.0) Gecko/16.0 Firefox/16.0
As you can see, both have the keyword "Mobile" in them. In contrast, take a look at strings returned by an Android tablet (from Chrome)
Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; Android 4.1.1; Nexus 7 Build/JRO03S) AppleWebKit/535.19 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/18.0.1025.166 Safari/535.19
Mozilla/5.0 (Android; Tablet; rv:16.0) Gecko/16.0 Firefox/16.0
As you can see, no "Mobile" keyword for Tablets. You can then use some programming to check for this keyword in the string, and then return the respective website accordingly. This should hopefully give you an idea on how to deal with tablet users. Take advantage of this technique and harness the large potential your tablet audience contains. If in doubt, feel free to ask any questions. Good luck :)
