Aakash 2 specs – New low cost tablet launched at Rs 1,130

The much talked about Aakash tablet was released to less than stellar reviews and a staggering amount of complaints. Aakash tablet was considered a failure. It was written off as just another good idea gone to waste, but it’s back! Today we saw the successor to the Aakash tablet, the Aakash 2 launch. One of the main complaints with the low cost Aakash tablet was, other than the delivery problems of course, it’s sluggish performance. Granted it was a low cost tablet, but a 366 MHz processor and 256 MB RAM just couldn’t cut it. It didn’t help that the build quality wasn’t up to the mark and deliveries took months or in some cases, didn’t arrive at all. The solution was to bump up the Aakash 2 specs.

Aakash 2 specs

The HRD Ministry in association with Datawind has launched the Aakash 2 tablet which hopes to erase all the bad memories from the past launch and hopefully be what the original was supposed to be. According to the press release, the Aakash 2 will be sold to Indian students for just Rs. 1130 and Datawind is supplying it to the Indian Government for Rs. 2265. The commercial version of the same tablet is available on the Datawind website for Rs. 4499. So here are the Aakash 2 specs:

Processor: 1 GHz single core ARM Cortex A8RAM: 512 MB RAMScreen: 7 inch capacitive touchscreenStorage: 4 GB internal, expandable upto 32 GB via MicroSD cardConnectivity: WiFi, GPRS (optional) and Mini USB portCamera: VGA front facingOS: Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich

You can get your Aakash 2 tablet from your educational institution for the subsidized price, or you can visit the Datawind Official Website and buy the commercial version of  Aakash 2 which is more expensive, but also has the option of a SIM slot. So what do you think, with the Aakash 2 launched, is it going to make an impact? Will Datawind finally deliver on the lofty promises they made with the original Aakash tablet and can they deliver on time? Only time will tell. Meanwhile, let us know what you think of the Aakash 2 specs and drop us a comment!

Airtel 3G Data Share Plan launched – Share data between 3 devices

The Airtel 3G Data Share Plan launched today, which allows a subscriber to share 3G internet data with upto 2 more Airtel subscribers. The maximum data that can be shared amongst the 3 subscribers is 5 GB. Even though the sharing can happen between both Postpaid and Prepaid customers, it can only be done between subscribers of the same circle. The basic price is actually very affordable too, considering that costs can be shared among the 3 subscribers using the 3G data.

Airtel 3G Data Share Plan

There are two ways in which you can start the Airtel 3G Data Share Plan. You can either visit the official Airtel website and register for this service, or simply add subscribers via SMS as given below:

To activate online, visit this link.

To activate via SMS, message “DATA SHARE ADD *Mobile number*” to 121.

It’s worth noting that once this shared limit has been crossed before 30 days, everyone in the pack can still continue to access unlimited data, but at reduced maximum speeds of 80 kbps, not a bad deal at all.

This is a great deal not only for sharing data between friends and family members, but for people who own a smartphone as well as a tablet with a SIM card slot, or for people with multiple smartphones. In fact, a lot of business executives carry more than one phone and this can save on data costs. It’s similar to the shared connection from Reliance, but this applies only to 3G data and not call charges.

The person who actually fills in the 1000 rupees is termed the “data boss” and anyone who recharges subsequently can become one. Check out the illustration below for more details:

So do let us know what you think of the Airtel 3G Data Share Plan, is it actually useful or just another way to get more money from customers? Drop us a line and let us know!

HCL ME V1 tablet with calling function launched

Just like Micromax and Swipe Telecom, HCL has too introduced a new 7 inch tablet with calling function. The HCL ME V1 tablet is the first tablet from the Indian manufacturer that can make its place among the tablets with calling function under Rs. 10000. While their previous offering, the HCL ME Tablet Y2 is capable of making calls, it also retails at a much higher price tag of Rs. 14999. Yes the HCL ME V1 tablet does compromise on some aspects, but it’s basically one of the cheapest tablets that is capable of making calls, and it’s not from an unknown manufacturer either.

HCL ME V1 tablet

It’s not going to win any awards for speed or innovation, but if all you need is a basic tablet that can make calls and won’t burn too big of a hole in your pocket, the HCL ME V1 tablet will do quite nicely. It’s got enough specs if you’re going to check mails, browse the internet or occasionally watch a movie, speaking of which, it supports full 1080P video playblack. One of the biggest compromises here is that although you can insert and use a 3G SIM for calls, you cannot browse the internet with 3G speeds. For faster speeds, you can connect through Wi-Fi or simply use a universal 3G dongle or a 3G dongle from any of the best network providers to browse at 3G speeds.

Processor: 1.0 GHz single core ARM Cortex-A8RAM: 1 GB RAMStorage: 4 GB inbuilt, expandable upto 32 GB via MicroSD cardScreen: 7 inch TFT LCD capacitive touchscreen, 800 x 480 pxCamera: 2 MP rear facing with flash and 0.3 MP front facingBattery: 3200 mAhConnectivity: Bluetooth 3.0, Wi-Fi, MicroUSB 2.0 SlotOS: Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream SandwichPrice: Rs. 7790

It comes with just Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box and there’s no mention of an Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update as of now, but with those specs we don’t think that’s going to be possible. The HCL ME V1 tablet will retail for Rs. 7790 and will go against the Micromax Funbook Talk. Do drop us a line with what you think about this launch!

Nokia Lumia 620 Launched – Budget Windows Phone 8 device

At the LeWeb 2012 in Paris, we saw the Nokia Lumia 620 launched without much fanfare. Positioning itself as one of the budget Windows Phone 8 devices, the Lumia 620 will  go head to head with the rumored range of Huawei Windows Phone 8 wallet friendly devices. The Lumia 620 is the successor to the Lumia 610, which was well received but noted for some compromises. This time around, Nokia has put in quite a lot of tech in the Lumia 620 and it even one ups the bigger and far more expensive Nokia Lumia 920 in one way, it includes expandable memory while the former does not.

Nokia Lumia 620 Launched

The specs are about on par with the HTC 8S as well, but there’s the advantage of Nokia exclusive apps on the Lumia 620 as well as “dual-tone” interchangeable covers that are now a staple of the Nokia Lumia range. Bright and funky aside, the Lumia 620 also trumps the 8S in the areas of internal storage (8 GB vs. 4 GB), maximum supported expandable memory (64 GB vs. 32 GB) and it also includes a front facing camera while the HTC 8S does not. Sure it doesn’t have specs like the quad core monsters out there, but for the price, it’s hard to go wrong with the Lumia 620. Besides, Windows Phone 8 has proven itself to be a frugal operating system and performance won’t be a problem. The Nokia Lumia 620 is expected to launch in January 2013 first in Asia then Europe at a suggested retail price of 249$. Here’s the specs of the newest member of the Lumia family:

LG Optimus G Launched – World’s first quad-core LTE smartphone!

4G LTE is the network standard of the future. It promises over 100 Mbps transfer speeds, but the downside is that not all smartphones support it. To be more precise, most new smartphones comes in different versions for LTE enabled countries and non LTE enabled countries. For example, the Samsung Galaxy S3 that is sold in North America comes with a dual core 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Krait and 2 GB RAM instead and the one sold in countries like India comes with the quad-core 1.4 GHz Exynos and 1 GB RAM. This difference is because the SoC’s that contained quad-core processors didn’t have LTE connectivity. Only recently SoC’s are coming out that support LTE connectivity and house quad-core processors. No more though, the LG Optimus G has been launched and is the world’s first quad-core LTE smartphone!

The LG Optimus G has still more tricks up its sleeve though. In addition to the being quite literally the most powerful smartphone as of now, LG claims it has the best smartphone camera, best multi-tasking and the most vibrant screen of all smartphones. Those sure are tall claims, but with all that power packed in it’s sure to be a beast. Here’s the specs of the LG Optimus G.

LG Optimus G

SoC: Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064CPU: Quad-Core 1.5 GHz KraitGPU: Adreno 320Screen: 4.7 inch True HD IPS LCD screen, 768 x 1280 px (318 ppi)RAM: 2 GB RAMStorage: 32 GB, non expandableCamera: 13MP rear facing camera (1080P video recording) and 1.3MP front facing camera (720P video recording)Connectivity: Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi, NFCBattery: 2100 mAhOS: Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, upgradeable to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean

Yep, it sure is a powerful smartphone. The only catch is, it’s going to ship with Ice Cream Sandwich instead of Jelly Bean. Although an upgrade is inevitable, with LG’s track record we’re not sure it will come soon. LG claims that even with these specs it will last for long, and offer upto 12 hours of talktime. Apparently there’s some new battery tech being used in the LG Optimus G that helps in efficiency. LG is really banking on multi-tasking here, and claims that the LG Optimus G won’t slow down even during heavy usage. All of this is packed in a very thin 8.4mm body, which is really quite impressive. So what do you think? Is this the phone that gets LG into the big league? Drop us a comment with your views!
